BIOS Password Recovery

Have you ever forgotten the password to your BIOS? Have you ever had your laptop stolen but you were calm with consciousness that you have the BIOS secured by password so your data cannot be compromised? Are you sure that there is no way to bypass BIOS password settings? This post will bring you bit other look at BIOS security and password recovery possibilities.

There are several means how to get into BIOS if you don’t know its password. Let’s take a look at them. For simpler writing we’ll use the term Comp for device on which we need to recover the BIOS password.

First, but most expensive solution how to recover BIOS password is to take your Comp to the nearest service center and ask them to solve the problem. It will cost you some bucks but you are without troubles, all is up to them. For most of people this is the safest way how to set the BIOS up instead of get it completely down.

Second method how to get in BIOS is to use default backdoor password provided by the manufacturer of your Comp for technical staff to be able to troubleshoot some problems. This way of BIOS password recovery is in most cases deprecated due to security reasons. But you never know… maybe some older Comp still use it. CAUTION: passwords are case sensitive and you have just 3 attempts before BIOS is fully locked! Due to above specified reasons (deprecated, three attempts), it is not reasonable to list some of those passwords here. Smarter solution is to get these magic words directly from specific BIOS manufacturer’s source.

Third way of BIOS reseting or password recovery is use some of third party software. Since these utilities are not from manufacturer of your Comp, be carefull when use them and read instructions thoroughly! My experience shows that a lot of links on internet expire soon so I’m not going to list these tools here. Better and more reliable way to BIOS password recovery tools seems to be a live search in Google.

Fourth manner is a little bit HW stylish. Use the Motherboard jumpers or dipswitch to clear the CMOS from which the BIOS gets an information. There is nothing to say more in this case, because complete procedure depends on model of your Comp. The wisest way is take a look in manufacturer’s official documentation to find out how to do it exactly.

Fifth method of BIOS password recovery is my favorite one and the simplest, I think. Since the CMOS is powered by separate source of energy (in most cases), remove this battery from its socket for couple of hours (6-12, in some cases 24) to have BIOS password blank. You should be familiar with BIOS settings before you do this!

I’m aware that there are another methods of BIOS password recovery, but I wanted to write just introduction to some of them, most frequently used. Whenever you deal with BIOS, keep in mind that unqualified action can lead to serious troubles!
